Some critics have dubbed the show the Spanish Orange is the New Black, and fans of the Netflix smash will indeed recognise several similarities – not least its middle-class, blonde protagonist. Civantos' expressions of shock and horror at prison life are indeed eerily reminiscent of OITNB's Taylor Schilling.
Some of the plots are just as outlandish too – inmates boiled to death, pet scorpions, and buried treasure all feature, along with the usual menacing guards, menacing gangs and menacing lesbians that have become the hallmarks of any women-in-prison drama.
However, "don't go expecting a largely breezy comedy-drama here", the London Evening Standard warns, "this is intense, tough, bloody, violent, and graphic." The show is now available on Walter Presents, Channel 4's online streaming platform which offers UK viewers the best of foreign programming.
